Tips and Tricks for the Holidays

sandatewhite

If the holidays tend to be stressful for you, consider these tips and tricks:

Plan out events with family and friends beforehand so there aren’t awkward surprises, and everyone can be on the same page for expectations. Feelings can be on high alert when it's unexpected. By giving a heads up "I have light sensory issues." It can give the host time to mentally prepare themselves.

Don’t assume the worst! Autistic people may have their reasons for needing to leave an event early and family members may have their reasons for asking for certain tasks. If there’s a conflict of interest, try to communicate why and compromise when needed. You wouldn't judge someone for leaving early for their physical health. Being autistic means our emotional/mental health AFFECTS our physical health.

Autistic people tend to suffer from stomach issues, make sure you are able to eat what’s planned at events, take a dish you can eat, or even eat before events to avoid being hungry or sick.

You can meet with family in smaller groups at events, maybe take a step outside with some close cousins to get a sensory break for example. No one needs to know details, you can simply invite them outside for some "air". You don't ever need to justify your needs to anyone and avoids misunderstandings about your needs.

It’s better to have a positive experience than to push yourself into a meltdown, make sure to have an escape plan ready so if you feel overwhelmed, you can easily step out without any issues.

Remember, no one is actively trying to hurt anyone’s feelings, if you feel overwhelmed and upset, take a deep breathe and excuse yourself so you can focus on YOU and you can come back to celebrate when you are at your best.

The holidays can be a very stressful time for autistic people because we experience life differently from your average person, but with communicating our needs and planning ahead, we can try and bridge the gap in understanding with empathy and kindness.

Everyone deserves a happy holiday, us included!
